Hard (human resource) HR strategies

Focus on the tight control of employees in the pursuit of organisational objectives. They involve a systematic, rational approach to HR management – where quantitative factors take precedence over qualitative factors. The job to be done is seen to be far more important than the person doing it. Employees are likely to be highly directed ie issued guidelines on how tasks should be carried out and rarely consulted on work related issues. They are also likely to be closely monitored and supervised to ensure tasks are carried out to the standard required. Hard HR Strategies can be linked to Taylor and the principles of Scientific Management, McGregor’s Theory X and authoritarian / autocratic leadership styles.
