Hawthorne Experiments and Hawthorne Effect (Elton Mayo 1880-1949)

Identified and recognised the importance of social relationships, communication and the interest and attention shown by management to their employees as important factors in motivating workers – more important than working conditions. In particular, Mayo’s work recognised the importance of informal groups over attitudes and performance.
