A Japanese word that means continuous improvement. It usually involves groups of workers that meet regularly to discuss how work-related tasks can be completed more efficiently. Because workers are involved in the detailed operation of the business, they are considered to be sufficiently well qualified to be able to identify any problematic areas and suggest improvements. The results of kaizen groups are aimed at gradual change as opposed to major rethinks. Consequently, kaizen groups meet regularly, with the same objective, ie to improve the business.
