Essentially boxes of various sizes and formats that contain graphical and textual information about a business / business’s product, that can be animated, and when clicked on takes the user instantly to the advertiser’s website. They are usually sold to advertisers according to the number of impressions ie the number of times the ad is viewed on a page, usually at a cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM), or on a cost per click basis (CPC) ie the number of times a user clicks on the banner and goes through to the business’s website. Although this is one of the oldest forms of internet advertising and is still highly common today, statistics show that it is has a low click through rate – possibly only 2 to 5 clicks per 1000 impressions.
