Involve an appropriate person or panel of people, asking potential job candidates a series of questions that are designed to obtain examples of candidates’ previous behaviour, (as opposed to providing an insight into just their knowledge and / or opinions). It is based on the idea that past behaviour is a good indicator of the candidate’s likely behaviour / ability to perform in the future. The technique usually involves: referring to the work involved, or specific situations likely to be encountered, in the position for which the candidate is applying, and asking candidates to provide examples of when they undertook similar work and / or faced similar situations, and how they approached them / what they did.
