An independent body (established by Royal Charter in the 1920’s) which produces standards on a wide range of products, services and processes, and provides standard-related services, eg assessment, certification, testing and training services in all areas of (quality) management systems. See standard, quality standards, quality management system. BSI was the world’s first national standards body but provides its services in well over 6,000 locations worldwide. As the UK’s National Standards Body, BSI is responsible for producing and publishing British Standards and for representing UK interests in international and European standards organisations such as CEN and ISO.
