The difference between total revenue and total direct (or variable) costs. Contribution is one of one of the most useful concepts in business studies. It can be used for calculating the following: The level of output required to break even ie ensure all costs are covered, ie fixed costs / contribution per unit; profit ie contribution per unit – fixed costs; and approximate minimum prices that can be set when considering a strategy of price discrimination.
