Industrial tribunal

A body of people set up to settle disputes between employers and employees, usually consisting of a legally qualified chairperson and two lay persons who decide the outcome of the dispute. They largely deal with disputes concerning equal opportunities and cases of unfair dismissal. Where the employer is found to be at fault industrial tribunals can insist that compensation is awarded and, in the case of unfair dismissal, an employee is reinstated or re-engaged (though compensation is more common in such cases). NB They do not have the power to enforce their decisions. This has to be done via a separate application to a court.
